Do you ever have those days when seemingly unrelated events happen in one day and yet become so interrelated, you wonder how you never saw it coming?
While at work recently, a friend stopped by my desk. While catching up I noticed that he had under his arm a copy of Tom Rand’s book, “Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World.” Not having read the book, my friend offered to lend it to me so that I could catch up on all things ‘Clean Tech.’

Whole person care: the legacy of Balfour Mount

The term “palliative care” was first coined by Canadian physician, Balfour Mount in the mid-1970′s. Inspired by the work of Dame Cicely Saunders in the UK, Mount set up the hospital-based palliative care unit at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Prior to opening the ward, he found the treatments for terminally ill patients abysmally inadequate. He set out to change that and was awarded the Order of Canada for his efforts.

Social Innovation Fund: Who will get to play in the sandbox?

The Social Innovation Fund (SIF), a White House effort to pump millions of private and public dollars into projects that are effectively tackling pressing social problems, awarded its first round of grants this month, totaling nearly $50 million.

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which operates the SIF, announced 11 grants – ranging in size from $2 million to $10 million each – to intermediary organizations, which will in turn award money to non-profit groups working in the areas of economic opportunity, youth development and healthy habits. Seen as a breakthrough announcement by a new kind of President in 2009, the Fund has understandably attracted attention from the non-profit community in the US as well as north of the border.
